I've heard a lot of people want to change app names. Which I'm totally fine with! I've heard a lot of love for the name "Voyager"

So, thoughts? Do you prefer renaming? Do you like the name "Voyager"? Any other good ideas?

I don’t many Wefwef. I’ve heard much worse.

That said, if you are going to change it, do it now and move on.

Ez wefwef

For many ppl RIF is Reddit. For me wefwef is Lemmy.

Don't change.

Vote for keeping wefwef. It’s kitschy and odd and unique.

Voyager sounds good to me!

+1 for Voyager

NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C, or D.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I like Wefwef. It is unique while Voyager is quite boring.

Another GrecoRoman god (in the style of Apollo, as an homage)?

Am I the only one who doesn't know what wefwef stands for?

Seems like Voyager is a hit...

... but, I do offer another series of suggestions:

  • Hubertos, the patron saint of hunters. In addition to linkages to a cure for rabies, he is the patron of hunters, which has fit with the lemmings and critters that we share online.
  • Muroidea is the name for the superfamily of rodents, which you can read more about here.
  • ~~Artemis is another series of manned space flights from NASA~~.
  • Ulysses is another example. Add in it being a name of a mythological explorer, and it adds another layer.
  • Mushak: Ganesh, from the Hindu pantheon, rides a mouse. This mouse's name is Mushak according to some sects. As a divine mount, there's some fun pieces of lore and how this app is how Lemmy users can ride into knowledge of the world around them.
  • Ratatoskr is a Norse rodent, who carries messages on the world tree in that mythology. As this app shares messages and connects people, it's a fun way to share the core mission of Lemmy.

Those are some ideas! Hopefully some of this is helpful!

Voyager sounds safer overall, but wefwef is cute and should be kept somewhere

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Change it if you want but “Voyager” sounds like some corporate nothing app named by bean pushers and commitees.

I think wefwef is a silly name and I’m surprised that so many people in the comment section like it, because I find the name to be cringeworthy (sorry).

But of course, I will still continue to use this app regardless of what it’s called, just like I still use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, despite it having a ridiculous name lol.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Having a silly and unique name helps the app in peoples memory retention. Imagine if it was edgy but forgettable. Nobody will remember it and it won't stand out amongst the multitude of lemmy apps being developed at the moment.

Wewef also invoke curiosity.

"What the hell is a wefwef?"

*searches google

I respectfully disagree with you on the memorability of the name.

I would respectfully suggest that if someone hears the name of this app for the first time, and then had to mention it a week later, they might think “oh what was that silly name of the Lemmy app? Was is wepwep? wiffwaff?”… whereas I would find Voyager to be more memorable, and there isn’t confusion as to how it is spelled.

That being said, there is one area where I concede that wefwef would be a better name than Voyager, and that is SEO (search engine optimisation). If you type “wefwef” into Google (well I prefer to use DuckDuckGo lol), then you’ll find the web app on the first page, whereas searching “Voyager” will give you lots of Star Trek stuff to scroll past.

So if I were making the case for the name wefwef, I would argue the SEO aspect rather than the memorability aspect.

Not to mention you'd probably run in to that Voyager app that is a crypto exchange / wallet.

Apollos chief epithet, Phoebus is my vote. Though it seems to only be common among the ancients.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

~~But wouldn't that damage your.. brand recognition, so to speak? When someone doesn't know you've changed your name and therefore can't find you, they'll assume you don't exist anymore.~~

Nvm all that, they'll learn. ;)

Voyager sounds way, way better than Wefwef, plus it's in the same theme as Apollo, so that's great!

[–] shenandoah 5 points 1 year ago

My vote for wefwef since it‘s unique and snappy.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Adding my vote to keep wefwef. I think it's more fun than Voyager or other options that have been proposed.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I would love to have it as Voyager, because the app seems to be Apollo's spiritual successor so might as well embrace the identity. Also, seeing that there are concerns that Voyager is taken by X or Y the simple addition of LM to the name should make distinct and free from any attachments. So:

Voyager LM

I cast my vote

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I prefer Wefwef, especially the dog barking sound. As an alternative I propose Lemlem - which sounds like a dog drinking.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I love Voyager!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

i like wefwef

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Someone already owns voyager.com - naming a product can be difficult these days as most common names are taken.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Something like Voyager as suggested would be much more friendly to new users

Though personally I like both.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Voyager does sound cool, and fits the theme of what you’re going for.

But other people mentioning discoverability has me leaning towards keeping the name wefwef. Or come up with an equally unique name.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

+1 for Voyager

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Adama or Starbuck

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like Voyager since it's aweb app too, like it can "voyage" to any platform. Or even referring to federation, you can "voyage" between instances.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It's also completely boring, derivative, and not unique in ans way. There's hundreds of things called Voyager, from space probes over (space) ships to night clubs and mythological beings and... just no. Wefwef on the other hand is great, it's unique, it's fun, it's easily pronounceable, but most of all, it's memorable.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Voyager is fine, although Wef Wef is such a nice, unique name I actually love it a lot.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Stick with wefwef. It has an originality unlike voyager (plenty of those)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I prefer voyager, or even “voyage”.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Lemmynade? 🍋

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I like the name, to be honest
