I like the effort, but I feel like trying so hard to coin a hip new buzz phrase (Dark Patterns) instead of calling it what it is (deceptive marketing practices) is counterproductive.

Right on. I've just see it thrown around a bit lately, and I think it just obfuscates the issue.
Dark pattern is not a new term.
And “deceptive marketing practices” is too broad. Dark pattern is a subset of that. So the title is being specific, which is something to praise, not criticize.
The nonsense Windows pulls, of continuously reminding me to "finish setting up" my PC is the worst. It's listed in the Hall of Shame on that site and I wholeheartedly agree with its position on there 😕 I think I'm going to stop opting for Windows upgrades entirely considering they're putting 100% of their development efforts into monetizing, and absolutely nothing into improving the user experience at this point.
