LAST TWO!!!! DAY 29 of the 30 Day Song Challenge, alternative music styles!

This one's taking me back....... literally! Now, what is "Childhood"? Could be being a little kid, maybe a pre-teen right? I guess technically a teen would do, but that feels a bit different. Oh well, have fun!

ONE MORE DAY Y'ALL!

1979 - Smashing Pumpkins.

My old man had Mellon Collie on cassette when I was a kid and I heard this song a lot growing up. It kind of sparked my deeper dive into Billy Corgan's discography later in my college years. Turns out, their first four albums were pretty great. Adore doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves. They made two albums called Machina. Machina I is kinda meh, but it's got a couple good tracks. Machina II was made in a rush because the band was breaking up. I forget how it got out, but it's completely unfinished and rough, but it's got lots of really great deep cuts on it.

Oceania is the last Pumpkins album I'd really consider great. And then there's the Zwan album, which I hear is one you either like or you don't. I think the second part of Jesus I/Mary Star of the Sea features some of Jimmy Chamberlain's best drumming. It's very Geek USA.

Anyway, I had at one point 9 of their albums. I stopped listening to them so regularly around the time I got into Car Seat Headrest in 2016, but I still spin up one of my old Pumpkins CDs from time to time.

1979 playing at the end credits of Gran Turismo 5 is really cool. It really invokes this feeling I can't describe.

I have memory issues. Add that to not getting into music until I was in my tween years and the one song that I can think of that had a lasting impression:

The B-52s - Rock Lobster

And holy shit, do I hate this song. My local classic rock station would play this sometimes. Didn't get it then, still don't get it now. The worst part is that it's so memorable and catchy. And just annoying. I love the Cosmic Thing album, but earlier B-52s just isn't for me.

Haha I totally understand that this song could be hated but I love it. Maybe I benefitted from never hearing it on the radio and "discovering" it on my own

So this came out when I was 8. My dad had cable back then and this thing called MTV was playing music videos. This one in particular caught my eye and ears. I think about those early 80s weirdo bands making their way on MTV and how much that shaped my music taste for the decades to come.

God this is such a good song.

Excellent choice ren! Sometime I wish I could have experienced the 80s

P.S. You may notice I'm posting from a different account. I had a bit of a snafu with my previous account. This will be my main account moving forward if you don't mind swapping this one for the other kvn for mod privileges. I commented in an older pinned post yesterday but I'm guessing you didn't see so now I'm bugging you here lol

The 80s had some really amazing music - the addition of synths really took experimentation out there (not to mention all the hip hop development then). Really was a great decade for all kinds of work. And noted on the mod stuff, will update it!

One of the previous threads was similar to this and I mentioned Green Day and Everclear but another thing just popped into my mind thinking about music videos on MTV.

They still played some music videos in 2005 and I distinctly remember seeing and hearing this one for the first time and being completely mesmerized. I was 13 at the time.

Gorillaz - Dare

Fall Away ยท Funland
I got a rando box of goods at an auction. This CD, "Sweetness" by Funland, was in it. Its lived with me since then. It released in 93, so I was 12 then. It isn't a long disc, but there's always been something about it that made my day feel just a little better. I can't even say Fall Away is my more favorite track, it's just the one I think people would want to hear first.

Seven tracks, one a throwaway, one a cover, I can only recommend giving it a whole listen if you're into it.
