South Korea's coastguard said Tuesday it had arrested a Chinese national who tried to enter the country after travelling by jet ski from China -- a journey of more than 300 kilometres (186 miles).

Wearing a life vest and helmet, the man crossed the Yellow Sea on a 1800-cc jet ski from Shandong province, using binoculars and a compass to navigate and towing five barrels of fuel.

"He refilled the petrol on the ride and dumped the empty barrels into the sea," the coastguard said in a press release.

That’s actually pretty badass.

totally completely 100% badass

Does anyone know what the sea is like on that trip? I would think if it was not very calm this would be a nightmare.

I don't really know but...

Looking at it on a map it looks like it's a huge bay, enclosed on 3 sides. I doubt there would be any significant "swell". There might be small waves whipped up on a windy day but barely enough to trouble you on a jet ski particularly if you're moving.

The main risk would be exposure. Too hot, too cold or too much sun even on a cold day can really fuck you up.

I've sailed there, granted it was on a merchant ship, and it varies a lot. If it's little or no wind or a slight breeze from the west he would be fine weatherwise but when we had a small storm pass through it was a bit rough even on a 200m ship. Would look carefully on the weather report before attempting this, especially since he was towing his fuel.

1800cc? That's a bigger engine than my car. In fairness, it sounds like my car gets better mileage.

I dunno... Even with a full tank, I bet your car is not going to get very far into the water.

"While his means of entry into South Korea in violation of the law was wrong, surveillance of the Chinese authorities and political persecution of Kwon since 2016 are behind his life-risking crossing into South Korea," Lee said.

"He is now weighing whether to apply for refugee status in South Korea or choose a third country," he said.

Well, that's nice. Glad they don't even consider sending him back or something. Hope he gets out of this well.

If this had happened in my country (UK) he'd be in a concentration camp by now.

Nice to know some countries are still civilised

Or Rwanda. They love sending immigrants to Rwanda.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They haven't actually managed to send anyone yet have they? Courts keep blocking them

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You are correct. Braverman and Sunak are appealing the decision by the Court of Appeal because they're inhuman but so far no one has been sent to Rwanda just yet.

China simps will find a way to say this is also exactly like what America would do

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Treason and sedition is a no-no around the world...

There's a difference between going "yo government y'all suck" and "let's take up arms and overthrow the government"

"Let’s work together and topple this invisible wall" Mr. Kwon said in the Twitter post

He described himself as “dedicated to overturning communism.”

showing images saying “use our votes to overthrow the government”

Hoh boy

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Voting is the proper way to overthrown the government. The other ways are more violent.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (3 children)

What about when the "proper" way doesn't work?

Nothing wrong violence as a last resort. Especially in reply to violence used against you.
