I like to tell my husband about various things our daughter does when I know she's probably listening. "She helped me with dishes, I didn't even ask. She just came over and said she wanted to help, so when I asked her to dry a pile of bowls, she didn't even hesitate. She was so careful and gentle and so thorough."

Not parent, just dysfunctional child of parent.

This would wreck my brain a bit trying to play a role that's seemingly immensely important to my parents.

For sure. I told her that she didn't have to, it's not her job or chore. She's 4, for context. I just want her to pick up her toys at the end of the day 😭

Mostly though, I want her to know that I appreciate her, and that I notice the little things.

What do you think would have been helpful for you growing up?

I didn't have that problem; my parents just did it to my face.

I read once that kids believe things they overhear more than the things that they are directly told and have been trying to do this ever since.

Yeah. Also if you phrase things poorly they take the bad meaning all the time never say ''you're no dummy'' you need to be more like ''you can do this, your very smart''

"your very smart''

The irony is extreme.

"Me no smart, you smart!"

This right here might be the most wholesome thing I've heard in a long time.
