It’s bad if you like to keep ebook backup copies.

too much like actually owning something.

Looks like Z-Library continues to be the winning option.

Considering Amazon is an American company, as a Canadian I currently have no qualms ignoring IP or rights holdings of an organization that supports a fascist takeover of my country.

Is it still around? I though it was seized by the FBI

So I sent this to my parents, as they've spent hundreds, if not thousands on their Kindle books.

They don't really care. Zero interest in DRM-free backups that I can make them. They don't think it's an issue. They trust Amazon to not mess with their books, and that they'll always have access to wifi and kindles.

And I suppose they also trust none of their books will be removed by amazon, despite evidence in contrary that Amazon sometimes does that.

Indeed.

I even sent them the related news articles about content I've had removed from my own devices, and still they don't seem to care in the least.

It is not like they want to. It is the legal wars that ruin it.

Check their libraries for their favourite authors. Get them a Kobo. Load it up with their favourite author's bodies of work before giving it to them. Problem solved.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for your parents hassling you for more books

I thought showing off my own kobo and library of books that I can let anyone I want read would convince them.

Nope.

Oh well

You gotta actually break the procurement cycle where they receive books free to own themselves and it's not some janky copy before they realise this way is better

You will own nothing and ~~like it~~ have no recourse.
