This actually sounds pretty similar to what happened to feddit.de - the former main admin/infrastructure owner stopped being active, and eventually the active admins had to move to feddit.org when technical difficulties sprang up that they couldn't solve with their access level.

~~Only difference is that feddit.de didn't go up for auction, it's still running just with minimal user interaction.~~ Apparently it was somewhat recently deactivated.

Only difference is that feddit.de didn’t go up for auction, it’s still running just with minimal user interaction.

Doesn't appear to be, there aren't any IP addresses associated with feddit.de.

You know it's the Fediverse when you see people using dig instead of nslookup.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 week ago

No need to point a finger at anyone.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just don't dig the way nslookup outputs its answers.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It is the most unparseable. And are you using a Unix or Heil-Tim Cook-flavored variety?

Unrelated kinda but I use nslookup because I thought it was more widely supported out of the box than dig?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I use a GNU system, which as we all know isn't Unix.

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where nslookup was available but dig wasn't. On Fedora, they're in the same package.

Oh, that's new. Was definitely still running last time I checked 1 or 2 months ago.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Oooh, 4 bidders and 14 bids too so it sounds like a real fight.

As much as I'd love to put my name in that hat and make the domain redirect to a gif a Xi Jingping getting anally penetrated, I feel like that amount of money would serve better purposes.

Over on the /0 general chat room we were coming up with things we could do with it, and I had the idea of putting up a page for donating to the families of Uyghurs Muslims detained by the CCP, and also for purchasing drones and other equipment for Ukrainian soldiers.

Every grenade dropped would be engraved with "From Hexbear, With Love"

A guy called Brendan* once did this to a website we were using for something and we never got the domain back.

How does it feel to be BRENDANED?!?

*not at all famous

Silence brend

They have probably already found a new Mali domain to host whatever the frick they are doing in their pseudo left, pro authoritarian echo chamber...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 week ago

There but for the grace of God...

I registered and tried to submit a large bid for the laughs but you do need to register valid WHOIS info before they will accept your bids hmm

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

How do they verify that? Every domain I've ever registered is for a neighbors address on the same street as mine with a different name. It's never been an issue.

[–] tostiman 3 points 1 week ago

Can't you just enter a fake address and name?

Whoever ends up spending 1500 dollars for hexbear.net domain should seriously sign out of the internet and reevaluate their life. You might as well take that money and set it on fire, what a pathetic waste.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm enjoying the memes and drama and I've spent 0$

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

What if you're a collector of novelty domains?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

$1,921.00 now. p_p_822628 really seems to want it!
