It’s time to boycott American goods. I’m considering Canadian and European companies for goods and services instead of American.

Sigh. My mom turns eighty soon and I've got to travel to the US soon... but I really fucking wish I didn't have to

Last time I traveled to the US was just before Trump’s last inauguration. Meanwhile I’ve done lots of online shopping in the US and a lot of my groceries are from the US.

Aren’t the tariffs going to result in me shopping less online, buying fewer US exports, and having to physically cross the border to buy stuff not available for reasonable prices anymore in Canada?

No, because that's not how tariffs work.

Tariffs are an incoming tax. If the US applies tarrifs to Canada, then imports from Canada to the US will be charged this amount. That makes them more expensive for American consumers.

Unless Canada applies a retaliatory tariff, you won't notice a difference. Canada is planning to retaliate only against specific goods, not a blanket one like trump is talking about. So you would only see the price increase on those particular products.

Or people can decide for themself where they choose to spend their money and ignore what other people say. Everybody can travel there or not, it's their money and their choice and don't need approval.
