You could also try toe socks. I really like my injinji socks and they definitely help.
Although I have found the very thin lightweight running model to not be as durable as I'd like it to be. The trail ones are great though and my favorite anyways.
A place for runners.

New Balance do some of their models in 4E width (which I wear). Having said that, I think NB's sizing runs very narrow in general, so 4E to me feels slightly wide rather than very wide.
Not many options for wide unfortunately. I used to run in Nike Pegasus before I switched to Brooks Ghost. Both have a wide option and both use a high drop (12mm I believe). Currently use Brooks Ghost 13
A couple of years ago I bought a shoe with a lower drop (6mm I think) as I thought it might help with some hip pain I'd been having. Turns out it did the trick. The shoe is Saucony Kinvara wide. So now I alternate between these and the Ghosts. The Kinvara is a faster shoe with less cushion so be careful about using them for longer runs.
I think Topo Athletic shoes may be what you are looking for. They have the roomy toe box of Altras but they also have some models with 5mm drop. I don't personally use them, but they come highly recommended in the trail community.
