@LegoRacers2

You can't expect me to believe there is a race of creatures living in well-ordered homes who spend all day making candy while their evil counterpart hides out in menacing fortresses that augur only destruction

Jokes aside, that isn't really the case. Most folks think of the European honeybee when they think of bees, when there are actually many other species of bees native to different parts throughout the world that humans don't farm for honey. Native bee populations are REALLY important to the environment, and so are native wasp populations. Wasps play an important role in the environment because they also pollinate native plants. Don't hate on wasps, they're really important!

They also murder other insects.

My brother genocided his yellow jacket population because they were murdering his bees (small hobby farm).

A few months later, there was a massive spider and other bug bloom. Like out of a horror film. Everywhere.

They're an important part of the ecosystem. But they're also assholes.

Your brother recreated China's campaign against sparrows. And it's aftermath.

Fun fact: there are fig wasps (some pollinators, some not) whose whole thing is just figs.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

And each fig variety has a whole species of fig wasps wholly devoted to it and you cannot switch them around.

It's not hard, but if you do it the food web collapses.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Oof that hit hard.

The real jerks are the wasp queens who kick out the workers so they have to go begging at picnics.

Both pollinate a lot.
Both have wars of various kinds, they have complex & dynamic social interactions & structures, they are great at logistics & planning, etc.

But one is somehow less pissed at humans.
No idea why anyone wouldn't be pissed at humans.
And attack us preemptively.

Bees are sus.

It's not like wasp nests are much less organized on the inside. Here's an example.

Cool thing about yellow jackets is they can eat sugary stuff as adults, like nectar and fruit, but the young need protein. That's why they're out trying to steal a piece of your hamburger.
