Here's hoping they post the full interview, no edits, and that Biden hits it out of the park.

If it's the same stumbling, incoherent presentation from the debate, he's done. He has to pull this off.

I'll be honest, I don't think I'd be fully convinced even if he does well. Why? Because Biden ran on taking the fight to Trump. He campaigned on using his Irish fighting spirit to push the bully back and anything but that has happened.

Moreover this won't be seen by a fraction of the number of people who saw that debate. Little said here can detract from what people saw of Biden's "bad days" during that debate.

I wish him luck because I want to be convinced he's our best shot, but it's going to take more than one good interview, personally.

Biden ran on a return to sensibility, bipartisan dialogue and functional government. That's the opposite of "taking the fight" to anyone. He didn't start acting aggressive in the slightest until the last State of the Union.

He even went out of his way to sound calm most of the time.

Quotes from post 2019 Trump vs. Biden debate:

Trump is “the bully I knew my whole life,” Biden told CNN in an interview. “He’s the bully I’ve always stood up to.”

Biden was asked how Democratic voters can have confidence that he’s up to taking on Trump when he had trouble sparring in last week’s debate against party rivals.

“I don’t think I’m having trouble sparring. It’s how you want to spar,” Biden said. “This is ironic. I’ve never been accused of not being able to spar. I’ve been accused of being too aggressive.”

Biden said he would beat Trump by “pointing out who I am and who he is and what we’re for and what he’s against.”

“This guy is the ‘divider-in-chief,’” said Biden, who added he will “fight without being personal” in this campaign.

Let's not forget in Biden's own words, he decided to run for President following Trump's words over the neo-nazi rally in Charlottesville.

Pretty tame stuff really. Video would also show he spoke pretty softly and soothingly during that debate if memory serves. I watched it live.

If it’s the same stumbling, incoherent presentation from the debate, he’s done.

If it is, I wonder what the excuses will be. The excuses for his debate performance were worse than his debate performance.

There is no reason to suspect they will. There is a reason it will be a prerecorded interview. What Biden needs to do is some town halls. If he knows he can't, he should know he needs to step aside.

It'll 100% be edited.

The question is can they edit in such a way that he looks competent.

It's good that they're putting the full transcript up, but these days there's no reason not to put the full interview online. Like Daily Show does when they don't have the airtime for the full interview

Dude, he's already been in public multiple times since the debate. He did a rally, he gave some speeches, and he did a medal of honor ceremony. He was fine in each, and you can watch them completely unedited.

Unless he's caught another cold and is high as balls on cough medicine, he'll be fine.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

My dude, you're equating readings from teleprompters and crowd greetings compared to organic conversation and debate.

White House said he wasn't on cold meds for debate.

Colds don't cause you to jump mid-sentence from abortion to immigration. Or to, "finally beat Medicare." Enough copium.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That's a fair critique, but I genuinely do think the debate performance was a one-off, a shitty confluence of events, and that he's otherwise been fine.

I'll eat crow if the interview is terrible or highly edited, though.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Respect. This is all going to get very interesting for the next week...

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Those were highly controlled public appearances. It’s pretty easy to get those done without fucking up. There’s no substitute for us seeing him in a completely unscripted and natural setting, and he has consistently done pretty badly in those types of situations lately. When someone his age starts to decline, it can happen really fast. He’s not to blame for that, it’s just human, we get old and lose our abilities. He is to blame for thinking he’s fit for another four years of one of the most stressful jobs in the world.

I want you to be right, I really do, but I’m not sure where you’re getting your confidence.

For the love of god get on whatever stimulant you need you walking corpse for a president.

We need you to perform well.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Maybe get Mayor Pete to ratatouille him?

[–] Bull205 1 points 4 months ago

Love this idea!

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 months ago

For the sake of the country, I hope he hits it out of the park

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I hope Stephanopoulos asks Biden if he has watched his own performance in the debate

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I still remember the debate he hosted between Obama and Clinton. I very much doubt that he will ask any difficult or potentially embarrassing questions.

[–] gravitas_deficiency 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

This is a very, very different context. I expect him to fire some extremely pertinent and uncomfortable questions. And I consider that to be a good thing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

He had a couple of vacant eyed, slack jawed moments like he wasn't 100% sure what was going on, but it wasn't as bad as the debate.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How did they compare to younger Biden moments? One of the things I've been thinking about is how his stutter manifests. In the past, when he encountered a word he had trouble with, he'd often try to switch to another word, and you could practically see the gears shifting in his head in specific stages. Stage 1 would be "oh shit, that's gonna be hard to say." Stage 2 was an obvious attempt to navigate the word. And Stage 3 would be "Nope, can't do it, let's try a different word." Sometimes the different word would fit. Sometimes it wouldn't.

How did his performance today compare? Were the pauses like that? Or did they seem materially different?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

It was less when he spoke and more when he was listening to the question, same as during the debate, only less pronounced.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

You can do it Joe!
