I'm in the market for a new monitor. My 32" LCD is nice but now I have some spending money and really want to move up to an OLED display, as they seem to be maturing nicely and can give me an amazing bump in refresh rate.

Many OLED displays are curved, of course. All ultrawides are, some severely so (800r!!!)
I've always shied away from curved monitors because I feel like it could distort the appearance of some solid/2d geometry vs a flat panel. (I'm also not crazy about the desk space they occupy either, but I can work around that).

Do any of you use CAD packages (solidworks, inventor, autocad) on curved monitors, and if so how well does it appear? My target would be a 34" or 42" 4k display.

Using fusion360 and freecad in my AOC 32" 21:9 curved and I see / feel absolutely zero difference to a flat display

It doesnt distort anything for me, my vision simply accounts for the curve and I have no problems

I use an ultra ultra wide 49" Samsung Odyssey at work and have only had one issue where I thought a straight line had a curve to it. Hasn't been an issue and I love it overall

I had one (minor) issue over the course of 2 years, I mention it because its directly relevant to OPs question. Its such a minor issue that in summary its never affected me

The one downside of curved is that if you have a light behind you, you will always have a glare spot somewhere on the screen.

But distortion isn't really a problem, the curve isn't really noticeable.

That's thankfully not a problem, as the only window in my room is directly to my side and all my other lighting is overhead. Thanks!

As long as you have the monitor height centered on where your eyes are, the curve is not noticable. I have a curved 34" ultrawide at home and a straight one at work and it looks 99% the same on both as long as I am not slouching.

Be careful with OLED, I've been looking at getting one for a work, and basically all the models right now go dim our shit off after a couple minutes of inactivity to save the OLED pixels from burning in. There were enough complaints for me to hold off until it matures a little more

I'd stay away from OLEDs for desktop usage still.

As for the curve. It'll be fine.

I understand the burn in risks, but since I don't need to run it at max brightness all the time and normally like running apps in dark mode anyway, I'm willing to take the plunge as I think burn in will not be that big of a deal.

Mostly just worried about curves. Thanks!

I'd be more worried about burn in. Static elements on your desktop are still a big problem for OLEDS.

They do look amazing though. Good luck 😁👍

Yeah, i;ve heard that too, but i've also heard that burn in typically happens from trying to run them too bright all the time with said static elements being white and not dark. i already run most of my system in dark mode and try to have a fairly dark room meaning i don't need maxed out monitor brightness, so I think I can mitigate a lot of the burn in risk. Thanks!
