For real though, the shortest license is probably the WTFPL:

  1. You just DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO.

Might've used it a couple of times myself.

You wouldn't believe the amount of legal ink that has been spilled trying to work out what the fuck the Do What The Fuck You Want To licence actually means, legally.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Now I kinda want to write a full license, complete with all the legal jargon, that takes up 43 pages of space to say you can do whatever the fuck you want with this software

Just list every single thing in existance the user can possibly do... "By agreeing to these terms the user can,.... In case the user can't do any of the following the user is permitted to not do any of the following."

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

Just be like, by agreeing to these terms the user can do anything mentioned in the library of Babel.

"You will now give me $40,000"

Agree

This is from the perspective of the company so you'd be 40k in the hole. You'd want something like "Upon agreement to the terms the licensee will receive forty thousand US dollars ($40,000) within ninety (90) from the licensor. There will be a penalty of one thousand US dollars ($1,000) for every day after that period if not paid."

You get to pick. 90 seconds, 90 minutes, 90 hours, 90 days, 90 weeks, 90 months, 90 years, 90 rotations around the Milky Way Galaxy, 90 cycles of the Big Crunch/Big Bang, 90 iterations of God, 90 iterations of whatever made God, etc...

I spend all that time trying to be precise and a whole word.

Let's take a page from the code reviewers handbook:

Just in case you don’t actually know, it’s Looks Good To Me. It’s very commonly used when software devs review each other’s code.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

And it's frequency of usage is proportional to the amount of code to be reviewed.

That's not funny at all
