Bats are cool

Bats are the only true flying mammals. There are over 1,400 species of bats, and they can be found on nearly every part of the planet. Not only are they cute, they are also important...

Studying how bats use echolocation has helped scientists develop navigational aids for the blind. Without bats’ pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control we wouldn’t have bananas, avocados, mangoes, agave, or cacao… that’s right, bats bring us tequila and chocolate!

Hello my bat buds,

I'm considering building a few bat houses to mount on my house. A few of my neighbors have native gardens which draw a ton of insects for them to feed and hopefully the bats will help keep the mosquito population in check. I've heard that building a multi-unit bat house is best course of action to retain heat better and that it also can take a year + for bats to move in as well.

Has anyone built one themselves? Do you have occupants? How long did it take? Got any pics? Any tips?

Cheers friends!

I should mention, I included one resource of thousands available on the subject. Please, if you have a better resource, don't be afraid to post it! Just trying to generate interest in others to build more housing for these wonderful and necessary creatures!

This is so cool. I’ve got a bunch of plywood and 2x4 scraps in my garage that have been waiting for a project. Maybe this is it.

I have built a bat house, 3 actually. No bats living there unfortunately. I heard it can take quite a while but the links to the guides here in your post are very nice. Each time I see bats in my backyard I tell them to try out the house I made. Just like my kids, they don't listen either.
