My conspiracy theory is that one of the US subs has already come down to check out the WA coast and their sonar has disoriented them! Thats the only possible answer.

This is a popular one. It doesn't have the ring of credibility for me. Whales have been doing this since long before the invention of sonar. I'm sure human activities have some negative impact on their behaviour but it's hard to conclude that sonar must be the direct cause here.
