If you don't want them to get some powerful magic item that they will have for the rest of the campaign, you could give them each a potion of fire immunity

If you help slay a fire elemental while attuned to the ring, you gain access to the following additional properties:
You are immune to fire damage.
Epic boons exist, the fire giant could give them fire immunity thats good for one trip to the elemental plane of fire
They are fighting a Red Dragon later... How do I explain that they don't have the boon anymore as soon as they are in the material plane? :S
I'd just have the fire giant explain that it'll only last for as long as they're in the plane of fire while he's doing it
