I'm an American but studied abroad in Denmark for around 6 months. When I was there, I found out that the Nordic countries have virtually eradicated down syndrome by testing pregnant people for it. 99% choose to abort. How do you guys feel about this?

Personally this is quite disturbing to me. I've known people with down syndrome who live happy, quality lives. Even if it is up to the mother whether or not to abort, when it happens 99% of the time, is it not cultural eugenics? It seems the culture is almost afraid of taking care of a child with down syndrome. Especially in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, where the resources to take care of them are more widely available. If you could test for other things like autism, or even something like extreme depression, would yall do the same thing?

EDIT: I am strongly pro choice and I have talked to many American people on both sides of the political spectrum about this and they unanimously agree with me. On an individual level, I support everyones right to make their own decisions, but when it gets to the population level it becomes more of a cultural issue. There seems to be a cultural agreement that children with down syndrome are too difficult to care for. Does that make it ok to eradicate them? I honestly don't know

You say you are pro choice but you anyway come here with your pro life BS… we do what we want and if you don’t like it go home and never come back… you don’t sell anything we want.

So sick of foreigners pointing fingers… one finger point forward four point backwards

“Strongly pro choice”

“Cultural agreement that children with Down’s syndrome are too hard to care for”

“Does that make it ok to eradicate them”

You’ve answered your own question on why most people would rather have an abortion, and followed up with a “but xyz” question.

You’re not pro choice, or maybe you are, but just want to have a debate for the sake of having one.

Literally why? You’re just baiting for no reason.

I personally think it’s more than ok to not put a child with special needs into the world, when it’s possible to know in advance.

I know that we have quite decent healthcare here, payed by our tax,but it doesn’t mean that bringing sick kids into the world is smart.

I want to add in this study that says only 4% of families regret having their child with down syndrome

The only thing faster than light is the speed with which I would abort a child if I knew with certainty that it would have Down's.

By your stats, 99% chose one option, doesn't that very clearly tell how we feel about it?

Honestly people need to stop seeing people with down as some happy people. Many of they have terrible diaseases and never live a good life. Abortion make sense

Been in the situation and we went for the abortion. We have an older child as well, and it is common knowledge that disabled siblings can cause severe strain on the other child, as well as the rest of the family. We went into the scan with eyes open, that in case of severe risk of Downs we would opt for the abortion. And we did.

We are not really religious- so we don’t see a higher power in committing our lives to bringing up a child with a Down syndrome. We don’t really romanticize this either.

I don't really see this as religious, i'm looking at it from the perspective of whether eugenics can be morally right. Based on these comments, it seems like Danish people in general think that it is morally ok

The test is not mandatory. The test is for several chromosomal abnormalities. Based upon the medical facts the doctors will inform the pregnant woman - not recommend anything.

The choice is free.

I've gotten better questions from someone with downs than this drivel...

You should have your statistics in order: 97% of pregnant women say yes to getting scans and diagnostics to search for genetics abnormalities.

Of the cases where downs is of high risk, 95% of the mothers chose to terminate the pregnancy.

Approximately 30 children are born with Down’s syndrome in Denmark every year.

EDIT: I am strongly pro choice

Wait, what? You are pro-choice but not if you disagree with the parent's decision? How does that work?

I’m Canadian and I would not keep a child with a serious medical issue like that. Yeet.

You can’t really compare downs syndrome to things like autism and depression. People with downs have a very high risk of diseases like severe heart defects, intestinal defects, impaired sight and vision, epilepsy, thyroid problems and dementia.

Part of why so many abort is exactly because they know that there is a high risk that the child will end up having a poor quality of life.

I would never go on with a pregnancy if I knew it was a child with downs.

It would ruin my life, my partners life and the child would also have an unworthy life.

I see no issues with abortion, in any case.
