West Coast EDM

Mainland European EDM is pretty well covered by other communities, so I'd like to make this page about what's popular on the North American west coast - Dubstep, Leftfield Bass, Brostep, Drum & Bass, Tech House and more. If you want to moderate and build out the page, message me and I'll add you!

Couple loose rules so far -

  1. Include the highest quality source you can find.
  2. Link posts should be newish content. Or, new leaks/newly available old track files or sets, etc.

You're welcome to post your favorite old tunes like they do over on reddit, just do it inside a discussion thread (e.g. 'What's your favorite 90's track?', 'Here's all of my favorite songs growing up and how it affected me'. 'Give me all your dubplates')

TMSV is a beast. The first time I heard it was probably Caspa, Rusko or Skream back in the day when it was just called dubstep and before Brostep came along making it necessary for a definition.

If you love some dubstep/ bass heavy 140. I post every day, mainly new releases, dipping into older tunes when nothing new is out and on my radar!

Can you please tell me what "real" dubstep is? I may or may bot have heard it yet 😇

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

"Real dubstep" is dubstep more true to the roots of the genre / sound that evolved from garage / 2 step kind of sounds in the early 00s. It concentrates a lot more on the sub bass and working with space to create usually quite dark sounds. These days it is a very diverse genre however which plays around with a lot of different styles and influences all around 140bpm.

Early artists like Skream, Benga, Distance, Plastician, Digital Mystikz and the like pushed the sound at FWD in London and on Rinse FM (pirate radio)

These days you can check out Cimm, Drone, Bengal Sound, Argo, J:Kenzo, Biome, Basura, Murkury to name just a few names that are pushing the sound in many different directions.

I'd be happy to reel off a massive list of people I think you should check out if this music is your kind of thing but also post daily over at [email protected] trying to concentrate on new releases (as I said in my other comment here)

Things like Skrillex, Excision and the like are more electro / metal influenced and whilst became known globally as "dubstep" they never fit into what dubstep originally was and stood for at all. This is now usually known as bro step and concentrates a lot more on a heavy assault of mids along with a constantly changing array of samples and sounds that often change up every 16 bars or so to add in or take away different elements so it is always changing.

😍 I’m all in for a big list of OG dubstep!

Could it be that there is something like "real" trap? I had a trap compilation with really great tunes (mostly without rap) but these days, if you search for trap, you mostly get crap..

Im in Apple Music, if you happen to know a great playlist there (i can migrate playlist from other services, but it is not convenient)

Edit: Found the compilation on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0thRs32jbM

I could vomit out a list of artists for you to check out if you wanted to but that may not be the best way to go about it.

I could recommend some labels to check out that might give you a selection of artists depending on their roster that all have similar sorts of sounds that you could then explore from there.

I'm not a big playlist guy and don't use apple music unfortunately. I could find some decent playlists on Spotify for you if that helps at all but I tend to go through and listen to whole releases, getting what music I can then I will spin my own mixes and listen to my own stuff a lot xD

I'd be down for real trap shit too cause I couldn't agree with you more! I used to be really into trap between 2011-2015 sort of time frame but then after that it started becoming more and more of that "hybrid trap" shit and I just couldn't get into that as much. Just listening to that mix you linked now and this is exactly the kind of shit I like. Stuff like early RL Grime, his early Halloween mixes and his diplo and friends mix are fire, UZs real trap shit all that kind of stuff I love!

I have actually started trying to collect more of the older trap stuff I used to like and trying to throw it into my dubstep mixes recently. Really like the mixture of the real dubstep sub lows with the trap 808s etc.

An artist I discovered last year is YYZ, you might dig their shit as it is a real nice mix of trap and dubstep influences in my opinion.

😃I like YYZ

Have you heard from the Shambala festival? It’s canadian, and the tunes there are madly awesome 🤩

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I know shambhala well although I haven't followed it as much recently I attended once in 2015 I think it was and it is hands down one of the best experiences of my life. Straight after that I went on to whistler for crankworx and to do some riding / climb some mountains. Canada is a fucking beautiful country, I loved it so much!

I'm not super into festivals but I would go to that every year if I could. Sadly with flights, accommodation, car rental etc these days I'm looking at like 2-3k to attend which I can never afford.

Having attended festivals in the UK and Australia they simply cannot rival the vibes and love that shambs gives out. It also introduced me to levi sanding after being absolutely off my tits on acid in fractal forest and having my mind blown for an age by someone with one I went home and spent weeks just trying to figure out what it was. Once I had I ordered one and taught myself to "wand". I haven't picked it up for a while but the festival kept giving me joy for years after I'd attended.

Now I feel happy / sad thinking about it and the likelyhood I'll never be able to experience that place again :(

I was never there yet, but it is on high priority in my bucket list 😁

Are you into psytrance as well? I really like hi-tech (oxidaxi, technical hitch, dark whisper, narxz, yatzee, virtuanoise)

If so, I can recommend shankra in Switzerland

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Psytrance is one of those things I do really like when I hear it but never go out of my way to look for or listen to it. I'll check out some of those artists you mentioned there though and have a look at Shankar.

And you will not regret a trip to shambhala for sure!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

😂nice, I very often listen to my hi-tech/hardcore playlist while driving (or doing other stuff) I can chill very good work that tunes, lol

Just listening to this mix for the first time and it is a great mix of old and new stuff within "real dubstep", you should give it a go!

It seems a bit too chill for me after scrolling though it for a bit, have to listen to it more carefully, tho, I guess.

That's fair. I've been pumping this Delta mix a lot recently and that is a bit more upbeat, could be worth a try instead :D
