I feel like Legends Arceus is the easy choice. It did some cool and fun stuff with the Pokemon formula and I generally had a pleasant time with it. Sword and Shield was a big letdown. I could see a lot of potential in it but the story and gameplay drops off hard half way through in a way that left me frustrated. Like I could SEE the potential. It was right there and they ran out of time or something I guess and just shipped what they had. Scarlet and Violet kinda went to the other extreme. It was like they wanted to avoid the story complaints so that's where they put their focus. All their focus. Quality control? What's that? Even now their online events are having to be run multiple times to make up for them being broken. And then still being broken the second time too. Legends Arceus is far from perfect, but they were able to strike an enjoyable balance. It has it's quirks, but nothing egregious.

This would be my answer as well, Legends Arceus was a dream come true for me. Still not happy about Dexit, but at least there's somewhat of a story reason for this time.

Can I ask what your favorite Pokemon game is overall?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

X and Y weirdly enough. Just to bully modern Gamefreak a little more, when Sword and Shield came out, part of their excuse for cutting a lot of the pokedex was the switch to Switch and needing to update too many animations. But my boi X and Y made the switch from 2D sprites to 3D models from scratch, and they got everyone. But besides that I liked the region, the cozy settings and focus on fashion. And megas did so much, giving new life to previously underwhelming but well designed fan favorites, and also reigniting the fanart scene with the burning question of "what would your favorite pokemon's mega look like?" Exciting times in the fandom.

honestly, let's go eevee is what i have the craving to go back and replay every so often. the core gameplay of catching pokemon is fun, it motivates me to complete the pokedex, and shiny hunting doesn't take forever.

Let's go Pikachu is considerably cheaper in my region, would the gameplay be much the same do you think?

Nevermind I just looked it up, they are remakes of earlier Pokémon games which suggests to me that they're quite reliably good games

Oh, forgot the Let's GO games in my other comment. They are the same game, just your starter is either Pikachu or Eevee depending on what version you get. They are a sort of retelling of Red/Blue/Yellow. I had fun with it, but it is pretty much just Pokemon Yellow HD.

Totally agree here, being yellow HD. Also can complete the Pokédex with Pokémon go trading from the phone go

This is how I for the very first time had a complete Kanto dex

yeah pikachu/eevee are versions of the same game, and they're both remakes of gen 1. i'd recommend them, i got a lot of enjoyment out of them.

I imagine if you've never played a Pokémon game that would be a pretty great place to start

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

if you've played pokemon go it's a good way of bridging the gap, but if you've never played any pokemon games i'd probably suggest sun/moon for the 'core' experience.

It's Legends: Arceus and it's not even particularly close. Best way I can describe it is Pokemon with some Breath Of The Wild mechanics built in.

I haven’t played any other Pokémon games on Switch, so I can’t really say it’s the ‘best’, but I did really enjoy Legends Arceus. Really a fun game in my opinion.

Just looked it up on wiki, it sounds really solid! Thanks

Pokkén Tournament DX. I absolutely love this game, but wish it got much more support instead of getting stripped of official Nintendo tournaments already...

PL:A is absolutely the best. After that, probably ScarVio.
