So.. I get this on some of my subscribed communities on other instances. I get some of the content, but nowhere near all. Is there a ranking which preferences synching of other instances communities? The more popular ones never seem to have this problem.. Or is there just 'lag' between instances and it's something that will have to be dealt with in the infancy of the fediverse?

I think it's just lag. there's a lot of content to sync so I imagine it can take a while in some cases.

It is not lag, it's more like your server simply doesn't know about the content yet because it didnt federate yet.

Say we make 2 servers, a.example and b.example and theres a community on a.example that is quire active.

now a user from b.example opens it, lettings its server know for the first time that the community even exists at all! b.example will not ask a.example for all the posrs on the community because, especially later, there'd simply be tol much, so your server only shows what it knows about.

we're not talking about "the first time" though. It'll be something like, I visit a magazine/community and there'll be some posts, but the most recent one will be 4 hours ago. I then look at the magazine/community on the original host and it's most recent stuff was 10 minutes ago, not 4 hours.

I'm seeing this currently too. I commented on a lemmy.world post several hours ago - if I go over to lemmy.world directly then I can see multiple comments responding to my comment, but from here I can't see any of them yet.

I hadn't realised that federation meant this much lag. It's giving me a strong incentive to go set up my main account on whichever server is where the communities I interact with most often exist.

Sometimes the federation is quick, and sometimes it's slow. kbin.social has been wonky with federation ever since I joined haha. it was down entirely the first few days, and now seems to mostly be working (albeit sometimes is slow or misses posts for a while). I think these are mostly just teething issues though, since kbin is very new and just recently scaled massively to a degree that's unfamiliar to the admin. I'm sure things will be worked out in the future.

But your suggestion of joining the instance that you interact with most is probably a good idea. It lets you be "safer" about losing access due to defederation (see how lemmyworld was blocked by beehaw). it removes federation issues (it's all native content), and the users there are probably more similar to your own way of thinking/doing things.

I interact with a lot of lemmy.world threads, but I don't have any intention on migrating there. I like kbin, even if it means missing some lemmy.world threads.

I like kbin too and I think my preference will be to stay here. But I'll see how things pan out - if these are just teething issues and federation problems continue to improve then I'll stay here, if not then I suspect feddit.uk will end up being the more obvious place for me to settle if I want to guarantee access to the communities I engaged with most on Reddit. But there's no rush.

Yes. keep in mind kbin is really only one month old, and in these past few days went from like 1k users to 30k. things are still WIP, the servers are being hit hard, etc. Give it a while and see if things start working out. Federation is already working much better than it was a few days ago when I first joined.

then only singular posts federated, for example because they were looked up explicitely or got boosted to this instance.

if someone from your instance subscribes to the community, then all posts from then on shoild be visible

This isn't happening though. I am subscribed to a few communities from lemmy.ml that definitely have posts, and there are other subscribers from kbin, but no posts show when viewing from kbin. It has been like that for a couple days. Check these out, for example:

Does this only show if there is a known delay for all federated content, or is it a default warning that will always show?
