I think that Sweet Pea is really the monster that became the lich reset to before he was a scholar of Golb, so I don't think of this so much as the lich breaking through as the even more ancient monster memories and power surfacing.

Apparently Golb is also visible in one of the frames of that scene

Really raises the specter of what else was in that monster mash that was of the same make as them
