I saw this post and wanted to ask the opposite. What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for? Preferably more extreme or unexpected examples.

Phones. Cheaper chinese phones already give one everything they need in their day-to-day life. I don't really see much benefits for most people from buying an expensive phone
