Is there a way to convert a link to a post on another instance, into a Kbin link to the same post?

Basically, imagine someone links me to a post on Lemmy.ml or Beehaw.org, and I wish to reply to it but from my kbin.social account. What's the easiest way to do that?

I don't think there's currently a good answer for this but one of us will inevitably write a browser extension for it

@CodingAndCoffee Thanks for your response! I have now found out that Mastodon actually has this feature — you can paste a foreign URL in the search bar and it’ll show the post within your current instance. Maybe Kbin would benefit from such a feature, too.

Curious that you think it should be a browser extension instead of a feature?

should be a browser extension instead of a feature?

Because with the proliferation of software across the ActivityPub protocol, it's an N+1 standards problem and devs of the main software have better things to be focused on.

Each instance can't possibly know "where" you might be going to/coming from in terms of protocol, but a browser extension could give you options like "open in lemmy, open in kbin, open in mastodon" or "paste as lemmy, paste as kbin, paste as mastodon" options where you could 1. have it tied to your current "homes" where you have logins, 2. filter to only the options actually available to you, as a result

@CodingAndCoffee Right, that makes sense. I was thinking specifically of the ability to paste a foreign URL into the search bar of my home instance. I think that should be a core feature.
