We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

I'm looking to build a new server. I want to go all ssd. I don't care to mount the ssds properly. I will be installing 14 2.5 ssds. What case would have enough space to cram 14 ssds.

If you're putting them in RAID make sure the drives are designed for RAID and the OS/File System can pass the TRIM command on to the SSD's.

You can always get a case like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003IIBO56

And mount four of these in there: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00V5JHOXQ

Just curious, have you used an SSD before this? I recently got a few for gaming (3 4TB, 1 8TB), and although I haven’t had these too long, I’ve had some trouble with the 8TB. I don’t know, maybe it’s because of the brand (Samsung QVO), but I’ve had no trouble with the 4TB version (and have been using it much longer), or because of the storage capacity, but it’s overheated on me 3 times in the past 2 months!

When this happened the first time, the file explorer window suddenly went blank as I was searching for something. I’m pretty sure I left my body (and crapped my ghost-pants) from the rush of anxiety that hit me… because I thought it was toast, and that was about 2 years worth of scouring the internet for specific games (sometimes multiple times for versions of 1 game that didn’t come with a free virus installed), and I never keep track of what I have, so there was no way of getting it back. But it doesn’t make sense, I play mostly indie games, and I don’t think my laptop isn’t complete garbage (Alienware M15 r4).

Long story longer, even after taking it out of a case, and placing a decent fan right above it, it still happens! I’m not taking any more chances, and backing up on a HDD just in case. So basically what I’m getting at is just to be aware of this, and Godspeed you hoarding emperor!😬👍
