Lemmy is given me a bad taste so I turned off federation. Hopefully the ability to block instances will become native to Kbin soon and I can turn federation back on.

Lemmy communities have public Mod Logs so even if a thread was removed I don't think it's gone forever.
Interesting. A few threads (from lemmy instances and beehaw) just ended up showing up as "removed" when I tried going to them. I figured the mods there removed it for whatever reason.
on kbin entire thread removals on that basically haven't happened since I've been here, and moderation is pretty light as a whole (either due to the admin being very busy, or just the culture). I had heard lemmy.ml is pretty heavy on the censoring/removals so I figured it was that. I know beehaw has a weird culture thing as well that sounds like they'd be pretty quick to remove stuff that is "off-brand".

that's a beehaw thread posted in [email protected]. This is the sorta thing I mean lol. Like what an odd thing to remove? Surely it's a fitting topic for a technology group?
Beehaw has strict instance-wide moderation policies (which don't really work in a federated model tbh, but they haven't seemed to realize as such yet).
Beehaw's trying to funnel Reddit-related stories into a single megathread. However, if people aren't subscribed to that community on their instance, they don't see the megathread and don't know to post in it.
Simply put - while Beehaw is a nice place, their moderation style is at odds with much of the fediverse. I wouldn't be surprised if Beehaw started defederating fairly broadly to prevent users from other instances coming in to their communities without respecting their rules and standards.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see Beehaw remove themselves from federation entirely, since they very much want to be their own thing.
Just saw the Beehaw has defederated from Lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. so you seem spot on in your assessment.

actually I just found out what's up. beehaw is completely defederating from lemmy instances. which probably explains why they removed the threads (made by lemmy users).
Do you know why? That's pretty wild. ETA: I see the answer in a Beehaw post below. Makes sense. I've never modded anything but I imagine federating with other popular instances with only 4 mods would be overwhelming.
Yup. So beehaw is a pretty closed site with strict moderation. They're trying to keep a particular tone and style for users and content (think safe space). Lemmy, in contrast, is open for sign-ups, and just had a ton of ex-redditors coming in with a very different culture, tone, way of interacting, etc. Since there's so many Lemmy users now, beehaws moderators couldn't keep up (there's only four of them apparently), so they defederated.

So from a quick skim there, most of those are actually not kbin mods. I'm still wrapping my head around the fediverse lol, but that modlog is actually from everyone not just kbin and I guess that's on purpose!
Yeah the linked modlog shows the mod actions from all the instances apparently, not just us on kbin. It might still be useful to see just the kbin modlog, which is probably on the to-do.

When Stalinists are running the main Lemmy instances, it should not be surprising if history undergoes sudden and frequent changes there.
There's an entire book on this predilection of Stalinism: "The Commissar Vanishes: The Falsification of Photographs and Art in Stalin's Russia" (1997), by David King.
More mundanely, posters on the main Lemmy instances should already have seen that if anyone mentions oppression by certain states, e.g. the systematic oppression of certain minorities, this will ironically be labeled as "racism." The racism of genocide denial is a Stalinist's bread and butter, and will never result in deletions or bans.

It could be the communities (magazines) I’m in, but I haven’t seen anything acting that way (with the exception of some instance overloads that caused federation issues during the first wave of Rexxit earlier this week).
I can’t say if maybe there are some issues in certain communities where that’s happening.

Beehaw definitely had its own standard they try to uphold. Just means choosing your instance is important to your experience.
Yup. Choosing an instance is quite important, but also difficult to actually do when you're new to the platform. kinda a catch-22. it's hard to tell which instance you're a good "fit" for before you start using the fediverse, and once you're on the fediverse you already have an instance.
There really should be a guide or something showing the largest instances, what their ethos/views are towards the fediverse, etc. Beehaw makes this pretty clear and have written several posts on it. But outside of just going to beehaw and looking at that, there's not really a way to know.
It's easy enough to get the vibe of users from an instance by interacting with them a bit, but that implies you're already on the fediverse.
For sure. It would be interesting if a method to migrate instances was built into the backend of lemmy, but this could potentially cause a lot of headache for instance owners as well. Probably not in the cards, but would solve this problem for sure.
