Can someone explain to me what the queue is for. Can you already see the amount of your tax return or is this just to adjust how much you think you’ve earned in the year?

As a fellow international, I don't understand it either.

The only explanation I have is that it has become a cultural thing like listening to the queen's speech at new year's, watching Disney at Christmas or celebrating confirmation even if you aren't religious.

I have never found any practical reason for people to see it in the first days, yet people speak about it on the news I'm the weeks before, there is a media build up and then the queue rush with even interviews on the evening news. Its a bizarre litte quirk lol.

It only opens officially on Monday, this is like the preview days, and maybe half of Danes will have checked over the weekend when they can just login in the middle of next week without waiting.

For me, it's not a cultural thing, it's wanting to "know" as quick as possible. I'm relying heavily on my tax return each year (I do not register my miles throughout the year and get them all back in April). If I wait, each day I wait is another day I don't know how much it is, and because I know, it's been calculated, the number is there. It's really no different than shaking your Christmas gifts to see what's inside days in advance. I'll wait for the queue to slow, I don't wanna wait that long, but I've had years where I was literally wondering whether I could pay my bills in May because of clap-back. Psychologically, waiting several days when you know the number is there, can be really stressful for a lot of people. Other people just think it's fun, like scraping a lottery ticket at the parking lot and not when you get home. It's quick dopamine if you get money back, and a quickly ripped-off band-aid if you have to pay.

But ok (hope this does not come across as too judgemental), it is a "lottery" you are in total control of. You can make sure you get money back if you want to. For example in principle you are getting money back because you did not put the miles in. Eitherway its either money you had already paid too much off or money you should have paid before. So its not like it is a "prize".

If you have an unexpected bill to pay and that can be the helping amount they I can understand some anxiety. But not many danes will be living payslip to payslip. Otherwise being "stressed" becuase of this feels extremly strange to me. But I do sometimes get surprised by some things danes "mistrives" with when they have such a secure lifestyle. So again no judgement, just more external curiosity. Thanks for the insight :)

I actually think that might be it. In the days following it’s also very common to share and compare results with friends and family.

Which makes no sense since they do not share the same income or the same discounts lol

Yes. Officially SKAT doesn't open up for it till monday, but they generally try and give us early access, which always means 500K+ danes trying to be first since patience is for chumps.

As an international. What a fascinating, odd phenomenon. Kind of surreal seeing like 10% of the population waiting in a queue at midnight to see their tax return 😂
