There are four sanctioned ways, all wildly different:

  1. Neat from the freezer.
  2. Neat from the cupboard.
  3. Added to black coffee.
  4. Long drink mixed with lemon soda (‘flyversjus’).

1+2 are most common. It’s used to degrease the palette after eating pickled herring. Yes, we shoot 45% booze with the appetisers. You can image how that party is like at midnight. Whether or not you can stomach 2 is what separates the boys from the men.

3+4 are uncommon, but none the less part of our shared cultural heritage. I kinda like the taste of 3, but it’s very particular. Both of these are from a time when snaps was the only booze (besides beer) available to most people; ‘make do with what you have’ concoctions.

As a curiosity, the flyversjus is DK version of G&T, as there was neither gin, nor tonic available to the UK troops post WW2. Make do with what you have indeed.
