It's part of a larger self-cannibalism capitalist market trend.

Buy up all the competition, lower the quality and lay off half the industry for profit, and then sell broken garbage laughing all the way to the bank because consumers have nowhere else to go anymore.

The end goal of capitalism is to end competition.
