You should say Denmark in Europe. Saying "the country" can be interpreted as meaning 'outside of a major city'. "Yeah I'm from the country" type vibe. My wife is Danish and we live in Perth, so this is what we had to settle on after a few attempts.

Yea na, didn't make a difference, unfortunately. Tried all of them. "The country north of germany", "the country next to Sweden", "the country in Europe", "the country, not the one down south", "the country in Europe, not the town down south". None of them worked. Got used to just saying Denmark and then specifying after they'd said something about the town

I do like watching people's gears turn in those sports of conversations. It's in the family of "oh you're from Denmark!? My friend is Dutch!" Two entirely unrelated pieces of information by you can sort of see how they landed there, and at the end of the day, it is just nice that people take an interest.
