Not exactly HomeKit but does anyone know of what I should look for in a TV to be able to control it's volume with the virtual remote on iPhone?

TVs can be HomeKit compatible, and you can control them via apps on your phone. Some (all?) Vizio TVs work this way and have an app called “SmartCast”. https://www.vizio.com/en/apple

I could be wrong but I think the AppleTV device is the ONLY thing you can control with the built-in remote on your phone. I think it’s a great device, so unless you’re already in the market for a TV I’d definitely get an AppleTV box. I might get one to go along with the new TV, too.

You can control HomeKit TVs and similar devices (set top boxes, receivers, which are sub-types of TVs in HomeKit), but the controls are limited.

I guess I should rephrase.

I already have a (couple) AppleTV and will be looking for a new TV soon. My current TV doesn't support volume control over HDMI-CEC from the AppleTV. I'm looking for a TV that will allow me to control the AppleTV and the TV power and volume all from the virtual Apple TV remote on iPhone.

My work has TVs that have this functionality but I haven't been able to find a TV that works with power and volume, all of them have only been power control.

Ohhh gotcha. Sorry haha. I have had two Vizio P series TVs and they both allow volume and power control. Power doesn’t work 100% of the time but that’s probably because of the crappy HDMI splitter I have in the middle.

Check LG, both of the models I have support volume/power/CEC

Can you describe how to do that?

When you have the remote on screen use the device volume rocker on the side of the device.

Right, but your TV has to support HDMI-CEC with volume change support
