Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Hey!

I know practically nothing about data management but I’m trying to store just over 2TB of photos/videos somewhere and I’m not sure what’s best, I’ve looked at cloud storage like dropbox but it’s all quite expensive. Currently I have everything stored in iCloud but that’s becoming an issues because it’s costs £27/month to upgrade to the 6TB option (the next jump up from 2TB). Most of the large files are videos I have taken at concert over the years and there isn’t much I want to delete. I want to keep it somewhere I can access fairly easily and have it act as actual storage not a backup as I need to delete it from my iCloud to free up space. Any help would be massively helpful! Thanks !

What is max price you can afford?

If you want easy access try

  • Google
  • Backblaze
  • Microsoft one drive
  • Amazon

Or cheap would be to get 2TB SSD. Of course in this sub Reddit we recommend buying 3 different brands and keeping them in a bank vault or mountain.

Don't forget the cold storage launch to space option or landed on Mars in a hermetically sealed container...updating it with new data is a bitch though
