Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.
It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.
Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

I've found over the years my Google Home Assistant app on my phones and Google Hubs can handle all of my different brand smart devices which includes switches, plugs, light bulbs, and smart home products like audio and visual equipment, not to mention my Sensi thermostat.
Once I set up the device in the manufacturer's app I never use it again as Google controls my drives from there once I link them to Google Assistant.
Google also allows for automation with digital timers and automated commands to control devices too. I think Alexa can do the same thing but I've not tried it. It's a lot easier since the days of physical controllers from radio shack..
