Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

What kind of hardware/software combo do I need to get a notification whenever somebody rings the doorbell? (alien.top)

I am aware of the existence of smart doorbells with camera and all, but I only need my doorbell to tell me somebody is currently ringing, I don't need all the other functions. My idea is a setup where somebody rings and I get a notification on my Mac, iPad and Android phone. For context, the network I currently have in place is just over Wi-Fi.

you can achieve this with a simple smart doorbell and a compatible app on your devices. look into brands like Ring or Nest, they offer basic doorbell notifications without the extra features. just make sure they're compatible with your Wi-Fi setup.
