I don't know exactly where it came from, I think someone may have said it came from reality TV, but something about the phrase "I love that for you" just hits me the wrong way. I understand the meaning and the sentiment, but it just hits my ear as condescending or with a hint of snark.
It’s like “good for you”…..
"It's not good enough for me and I would never choose it but it's good enough for you because you are lesser than me"
It's supposed to be condescending isn't it? Woops, I've always used "I love that for you" as a backhanded insult.
Otherwise I'd say "that's amazing, I'm really happy for you!" if I was genuine.
