So, I'm looking to set up a personal cloud and plex server on a synology nas, and this was the excuse I needed to upgrade my modem and router with it. I've got the modem but now I'm lost on which router to get. If anyone has any suggestions or even questions I should be asking, help would be appreciated.

Do you need to upgrade your router? Most of the time the bottleneck is the ISP limits on the Internet connection, not the modem or router. If you do want to replace your router, my vote is Opnsense. You can run it on pretty much any x86 machine with at least two Ethernet ports.
