They've always been like this. The competition is pretty much the same, I have no good word for MSI, Asrock, Gigabyte, Bioshit... All marketing, nickel & diming for couple extra cents of margin here and there.
Asus makes very few, specific models, with high quality and features every now and then but most of what they sell is utter garbage.
It would blow the mind of someone 10 years ago but at this point Asrock might be the least bad. At least the Taichi Lite showed they understand people want better features with less gaudy BS.
My current rig uses a 13 year old Z75 AsRock mobo that has had zero issues besides a RAM slot failing. I dunno why people say they're bad.
