People are shitting on Germans public broadcasting and its fee a lot and there have been a couple of actual scandals, but all in all the news and investigative pieces they produce are so important.

The reason people shit on it is not their news department. The reason is that most money they get is wasted on football broadcasting licenses and shitty soap operas. Also, because they have seats for the church on their board. But otherwise, yes, public funded journalism is a good thing.
