Is there some secret to this? Either I'm trying to cautiously untangle the plant without breaking any leaves so I can water it in the sink or I'm leaking water all of the floor.

Idk if it's just me but the image won't load for some reason. Are you basically watering it gradually enough that it never drains out the bottom of the pot?

TL;DR: Yes. It's just a drip system that doesn't flood the vase.
