I want to use set google as the search engine for emacs but can't figure out the process

Emacs doesnt have a default search engine per se. You need to install a package for google goodness : Maybe look at https://github.com/Malabarba/emacs-google-this and also , the built in browser : https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/eww.html : particularly eww-search-prefix.
