How hot does it usually get there?

In summer if it reaches 34 that's hot enough that people might complain, but it's certainly not major newsworthy.

You're right though, that our winter is a lot warmer than yours. As others have noted though, we're not set up for it. I've heard from (Nordic) Europeans and Canadians who have said that the day-to-day experience of winter is actually worse here than in their homeland, because of a lack of good insulation and household heating in most homes.
