ETH isn't an altcoin anymore according to journalists (monero.town)

I have seen more and more news articles treating ETH with language that says it is not an altcoin. They will say BTC and ETH, and then they will handle altcoins like a separate category that does not include ETH. Do you agree with this designation and what do you think caused the change?

I am not sure I really noticed this.

My impression was that most people who've heard of Bitcoin also have heard of ethereum (and also Dogecoin). However, in terms of popularity among non-crypto the next coin/project is much less know I think
