Never finished Higurashi with all the (let's say) intentional repetition going on, so somebody filled me in on its big(gest?) spoiler years later. Might actually start it back up some day. More likely to watch analysis videos instead... or play one of the visual novels. ๐Ÿค”

Ah, the spoiler may detract from it. A big part of Higurashi is the "what the fuck is going on here" factor. I started watching it again recently. Too soon to decide if it holds up overall the second time, but it does feel less scary since I already know the overall plot.

The anime also has a trap in that it's not exactly clear initially how the seasons are connected. I initially thought season 1 was a stand-alone story, and was sorely disappointed by the ending until I realized it was continued in season 2. Happened to a friend of mine too, he only watched season 1 a while back, hated the ending, and then I had to harangue him into continuing.

Season 3 on the other hand is just an OVA after-story thing that happens after the main plot has wrapped up. I don't know what's going on with season 4 and 5, as they weren't out yet when I was watching.

You might appreciate this:

This VN is a horror masterpiece. While the anime adaptation manages to capture some of its charm, it doesn't come close to how tense and terrifying the VN truly is. Compared to the anime, the VN made me feel so much more attached to the characters through stellar comedy scenes at the beginning of each arc. This is an all-star cast, and everyone has a little bit to offer. The plot itself is also very thoughtful and surprisingly topical. -https://vndb.org/w1002

I've done very little in the way of VNs thus far, but I'll check it out. Thank you. :)

Haha, I think the main thing stopping me has been that they're almost all for Windows. I know I can probably run them with Wine, but it's still a hurdle, if just a small one. I really appreciated that Doki Doki Literature Club supported Linux, even if it was very "babby's first VN".
