Community Rules
You must post before you leave
Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).
Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.
Use content warnings and/or mark as NSFW when appropriate. Most posts with content warnings likely need to be marked NSFW.
Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".
Bigotry is not allowed, this includes (but is not limited to): Homophobia, Transphobia, Racism, Sexism, Abelism, Classism, or discrimination based on things like Ethnicity, Nationality, Language, or Religion.
Avoid shilling for corporations, posting advertisements, or promoting exploitation of workers.
Proselytization, support, or defense of authoritarianism is not welcome. This includes but is not limited to: imperialism, nationalism, genocide denial, ethnic or racial supremacy, fascism, Nazism, Marxism-Leninism, Maoism, etc.
Avoid AI generated content.
Avoid misinformation.
Avoid incomprehensible posts.
No threats or personal attacks.
No spam.
Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Ada does the hard work of blocking people so I don't fucking have to. Thanks, Ada.
The number of people who refuse to follow the rule of "if you don't like it, don't engage with it" is too damn high. It's like people think they're owed others hearing their opinions. No, we don't owe you that, especially not after you've disrespected very simple rules.
It was kind of wild reading the comments on those posts in YPTB where people were both saying "I don't even like the instance" but also getting mad that they'd been banned from the instance. If you've never interacted with the instance, why do you care so much if you're banned?
I did see a few people mention they liked visiting 196, and I can understand being a little annoyed at a ban especially if you weren't saying what got you banned on blahaj, but my impression is that banning from blahaj isn't a final permanent decision, just a preventative measure.
That poster was Just Not Getting It. Ffs, a comm banning you pre-emptively for being a douchecanoe - especially in a move that's protecting part of the Community under attack in this day and fucking age - is a no goddamn brainer.
Although i did start howling when they were losing track of what "they" were banned for and what OtherUserTotallyNotASockpuppet was banned for.
It was some real DARVO shit.
Blahaj: we are banning this person to prevent their odious, abusive behavior from arriving on our instance to protect the sanity of our userbase.
Banned: Nuh uh, that's overreach, you're the real abuser here! I feel personally attacked!
Found another post and another sockpuppet. Also dunno if anyone saw but they were whingeing in feddit too and i've even seen what i strongly suspect was tumblr rantpost
Multiple sites, multiple alts, all railing and raging... really just proving the point there bud....
I think they care because they wanted to express their opinion to the trans people on Blahaj but can't because they're banned from the communities and their responses won't even be seen by them. They're mad for the same reasons regular bigots get mad about being banned, they want to be able to force their opinion onto others, exactly like they say we force our opinions on them.
What was wild/hilarious to me was that so many of them are banned from Blahaj that I had to view the original thread on db0 to see over half the comments in the thread. I was receiving so many replies that just... didn't federate to Blahaj... I never would have seen them if I hadn't checked the other instance's version of the thread.
That feel when they can't even bother you because your admin is watching your back.
Impeding their god given right to be an arsehole?? THIS INJUSTICE CANNOT STAND!!
Lol, I bet those people couldn't not be assholes if their lives depended on it.
