article is still focused on "we desperately need to make the US our reliable friend, and must continue to make Russia an enemy"

Europe’s urgent task is to relearn how to acquire and wield power; it must be prepared to confront adversaries and sometimes friends, including America, which will still be there after Mr Trump. Instead of cowering, it needs an objective appraisal of the threat.

The objective appraisal of the threat is that EU is protected from US by an ocean. Doing trade based on lowest bidder with counties, like Russia, who have never threatened Europe is orders of magnitude more practical than begging the US to extort it.

Wait what? Russia never threatened Europe? Russia currently invades a European country and occupies parts of another. And all this while they are assassinating people inside the EU and waging digital warfare on our infrastructure and democracy.

Russia is WAY PAST just threatening Europe.

Regarding the article itself: Always the same fallacy. We need more money for weapons, so cut social security. No we "just"?need to raise taxes from the rich.

Ukraine provoked war, with US corruption. But while Russia has reacted strongly against EU/NATO provocations, it has not acted against non-CIS states which US/NATO has had strong corruption operations for purposes of attacking Russia.

We need more money for weapons, so cut social security. No we “just”?need to raise taxes from the rich.

Instead of weapons, whether through taxing rich or eating poor, to attack Russia, normal relations makes all better off.
