Each offense to democracy weakened it allowing to the eventual rise of fascists, however, the fascists were always there in the shadows or more since the foundation of fascism and the prototypes to it (ya know, transatlantic slave trade, genociding natives - an inspiration for Hitlers final solution). Some say in the modern era it started with not holding Nixon accountable. I wasn’t alive then. But I was alive and old enough to see bush’s 2000 election theft (look up brooks brothers riot - lots of notable names involved) and the lack of response towards it. And then 9/11 and the patriot act, Guantanamo, the NSA spying, authorization for drone strikes abroad on American citizens without due process, the forever wars on terror in Afghanistan and Iraq, establishment of homeland security, blocking Obama’s ability to pick a SCOTUS judge, funding Israel’s genocidal state, there’s so much blowback from the middle eastern adventures in imperialism it’s not even funny. I can go on and on and on. I forgot a major one - nobody responsible for 2008 financial crash going to prison. Not one fucker. All got golden fucking parachutes while everyday people lost their homes. Thanks neoliberalism for the material conditions that bring fascism! Then there’s the persecution of the actual left - the people who fought for environmental, animal, civil rights and against capitalism getting life sentences on terrorism charges. So much of the rise of the authoritarian state has been a bipartisan power grab and infringement on the civil rights of citizens. And all protesting does is get one wrapped up in the system and put on a list. The people in power aren’t afraid of the masses. And now they’re fucking around so badly, they should be.
