Hi! I'm new here but i've been lurking around the lemmyworld for a while and as a big advocate of freedom of speech
All i see anymore are people being divided and blaming each other for not acting right but without being willing to change how they act at all. And it breeds so much fear and anamosity that the changes they fight against eventually come about just so one side can spite the other.
Like, people are never going to agree on things and its pretty much always been that way so why don't we learn to agree to disagree.
Someone once said a great deal is one where both parties walk away feeling like they've pulled one over on the other, and a good deal is where both parties walk away feeling like they've been had.
Sometimes compromise isnt' pretty but the way I see it today is that the compromise step has been skipped entirely, so now people are having their rights taken away without getting anything in return where as they could have been making a deal
for instance: the left just lost the right to abortion, which I agree sucks, but the right is just taking that without any reprocussions. It might be too late now but I've always said that if there are certain rights we don't want other people to have its only right to give up a right of your own as a compromise
maybe if we'd compromised before, the left could have worked with the right and made a deal saying somehting like, the left will give up the right to abortion, if the right will give up their guns!
It hits both sides where it hurts, but also no matter what way you look at it both sides are saving lives.

i cant believe what im reading here you think we should give up our guns are you kidding me thats never going to happen and let me tell you why because without guns how are we supposed to defend ourselves against all the unauthorized abortion clinics that are just going to pop up everywhere and dont even get me started on the fact that you think the left would actually follow through on their end of the deal they would just take our guns and then still find a way to get their abortions and we would be left defenseless and thats just not going to happen checkmate lib you think youre so smart with your compromise and your deals but you dont understand the reality of the situation we need our guns to protect ourselves and our families and our communities from all the abortions out there and youre just drinking the kool aid if you think otherwise and another thing what makes you think the right is just taking away the lefts rights without any repercussions have you seen the way the left is trying to silence us and erase our history and our culture theyre the ones who are trying to take away our rights and our freedoms and we wont let them and we wont give up our guns no matter what

i hear what you're saying and I don't think you're following my logic here: if there are no abortion clinics, you don't need your guns to prevent them from popping up(even though thats a silly reason for guns). And the pro gun argument i hear all the time is that even if you take the guns away from the good people , the criminals are still gonna get their guns. its the same with abortions! theyll still go to canada or vermont or something but the babies that dont get aborted wont end up getting shot either.
Maybe we could take it further and say just no assault rifles and no late term abortions? I just think more kids in school is a good thing and if babies are born and they dont get shot, that's a win in my book

because the same can be said about the right. trans is as much a culture as "being a southerner" or 'gun culture' and the right is trying to erase that culture. it's just another place where we gotta talk to each other and noot just assume checkmate right away
