Does anyone know why some eGPUs are specifically for Macs? Do any of these also work with PC? (lemmy.world)

I'm trying to figure out how to get an eGPU for my surface pro 9. I thought any eGPU would work but I'm coming across a lot of eGPUs that seem to be made for Mac. Is this a case of specifying that something is also compatible with Mac or are some thunderbolt based eGPU for some reason only mac compatible?

if it's made for macs specifcally, it's way more expensive; twice, at least. so while it may be usable on non-apple hardware, that's not a good value proposition.

you should look into DIY-ing it. TB4 circuitry from Aliexpress and friends is in the sub-$100 range and all you need then is a semi-decent PSU and the GPU of your choice. they are way cheaper if you can utilise M.2 interfaces, like $50ish.
