Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

See, to the informed, liberal means someone who follows the liberal capitalist school of thought, typically associated with the Austrian school.

To absolute fucking morons, it means "people I have been told I don't like"

This is why constructive conversation is tough

I mean, liberal, in broad definition, means a person believing in liberalism - that the liberty of people should not be infringed unless it's absolutely necessary (like you can forfeit your right to liberty if you kill someone or steal something)

and that doesn't include Joseph Stalin

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It doesn't include Hitler either; I am not stating it does. I am a liberal however one that supports more left wing policies (like pro minorities policies like ban of conversation therapy, equal marriage and easying the procedures for transitioning, as well as supporting union rights, strong social nets, welfare and strong safety regulations and worker rights) while believing that the state should justify all intrusion of personal liberty and keep some sort of reasonably regulated, yet free market in place.

The free market is a alright enough default when efficiency is desired, but the government needs to take a more permanent active role. That would fit under safety regulations, but with an expanded understanding to correct for long term externalities.

The expectation under liberalism seems to be that business activity is a right, so every intrusion by the government must be justified. I don't think business activities should be thought of as rights, only the ability to earn a living and be happy. Business rights and personal rights will inevitably come into conflict, and personal rights often lose. We need to make business exist for people, or people will exist for business. Business actions must be justified by how they serve us, just like government actions. Neither are people

No, personal liberty takes precedent over economic liberty. Full stop. The machine works for all the people or for none of them

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

You would think, but not under the current system

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Well okay yes, also a totally fair interpretation, but still very much in contrast to "people I don't like" at the end of the day

Not really. It's more about personal and societal liberty than capitalism. If you are "economically liberal" then you are a republican
