I wonder if their intent was to help people find a good VPN or to be the place people who want to find a VPN go and then give up looking for one.
Seems like the best way to get people to hate something isn't by going around telling people that they should hate it. It's by becoming a spokesman for that thing and telling people they should love it while making them hate you (and everything associated with you).
Numerous schools of thought here BUT setting the “arbitrary” line for “shilling” at specific brands does have the benefit of helping to remove astroturfing.
The skincare subreddit and cerave come to mind.
With vpns you can at least talk about the technology and benefits of protocols and whatnot so that people know what to look for in a company.
This is of course me taking the most open minded stance I can wrt their rules
