Possibly the best hardware ever to be completely screwed from day one.
EA immediately shunned the platform, after assorted drama on Genesis on Saturn. That's why Sega made all their own sports games. Really, Sega's software side was killing it, cranking out cult hits in every genre imaginable. Third-party ports looked killer, too, with Resident Evil upgrades and a Tony Hawk that didn't wobble or blur.
They'd had an online strategy since the fucking Genesis, and I mean, since before the SNES launched. Microsoft didn't even do Xbox Live until a year in. And the Dreamcast shipped with a modem as standard! Everyone had one! Still didn't help, of course, because dial-up console internet was always going to stay a niche within a niche, even in Japan.
And absolutely none of it mattered because Sega was broke as fuck. Sony just showed a black slab and said: "Wait." That was enough. The Dreamcast was cancelled before the PS2 even launched.
